In Born in the Year of Courage, By Emily Cofford, Manjiro is a fifteen year old boy. He takes care of his mother, his three sisters, and his brother. His father died when he was ten. This book is set in Honolulu and in America.
The setting starts off in Japan, than moves to this rock island with on trees, no water, and no food. They were rescued by an American ship and brought to Honolulu. Honolulu’s music was lover than the song bird. The colors are like their home land. In America most of the people are nice. The lands are very beautiful and big.
Manjiro went fishing and stuck on a rock island. The American ship and got stuck on a rock island. The American ship picked them up and took them to Honolulu. From Honolulu Manjiro has gone to school and learned from the people on the ship. The actions and behavior is very believable.
I loved the book it was very believable, I might even read another book by this author.
